Gym Challenge Pop Report (2026): PSA 10 Population for Every Holo, Both Printings
On this page
There are 4,216 PSA 10 Gym Challenge cards in existence across the 21 printings with countable populations — out of 36tracked printings in the set, the deepest census in this series. This page lists every one of them: the PSA 10 population of every holo, in both printings (1st Edition and Unlimited), with the gem-mint price next to each count. PSA's own population report now sits behind a login; ours is free, built on exact GemRate population chains, and refreshed monthly. It is one chapter of the full WOTC pop report — and the cost side of the same data lives in what a complete PSA 10 Gym Challenge set costs.
How Many PSA 10 Gym Challenge Cards Exist?
4,216 PSA 10s across the countable chase printings — 18 of those 21 counts are exact GemRate chains (the rest are modeled and marked †), and the remaining printings of the 36we track don't yet resolve to a verifiable count, so they are excluded from the total rather than guessed. The table below is the full census, scarcest first. The pattern worth noticing before you scroll: same story as the other Gym set — the Unlimited holos are quietly some of the rarest gems of the era. The 1st Edition stamp drove twenty-five years of grading submissions while the unstamped copies went unslabbed.
How Many PSA 10 Blaine's Charizards Are There?
421 PSA 10 1st Edition Blaine's Charizards — an exact GemRate chain, from 3,889 total gradings. That is a 10.8% gem rate, and it is the honest surprise of this report: the face of the set is notrare in gem mint. The year-2000 print run was cleaner than 1999 Base Set (where the Unlimited Charizard gems at 0.48%), so roughly one submission in nine comes back a 10. The Unlimited Blaine's Charizard, meanwhile, has no resolvable chain at all — its population is unknown, which tells its own scarcity story. The full pyramid:
421 tens against a $18,600price means the market is paying for the card's status, not its census — there are rarer gems in this set at a tenth of the price, as the scarcity table below shows. The premium is live here:

The Unlimited Giovanni's Persian, at pop 28 — an exact chain, priced at just $1,560. The Unlimited Erika's Venusaur (pop 40) and Unlimited Rocket's Mewtwo (pop 73) follow, and all three are unstamped printings. For scale: there are fifteen times as many PSA 10 1st Edition Blaine's Charizards (421) as Unlimited Giovanni's Persians (28). The scarcest gems in Gym Challenge live in the printing nobody bothered to grade, and they are still priced like footnotes:

Unlimited — every single time.In Base Set the answer flips card by card; in Gym Challenge, all six holos where both printings have countable populations come back Unlimited-rarer, and it is rarely close: Rocket's Zapdos is 261 stamped gems against 20† unstamped, Rocket's Mewtwo 293 against 73. Across every countable printing, 3,411 of the set's 4,216 gems are 1st Edition and only 805 are Unlimited. The side-by-side census — the orange number is the rarer printing:
| # | Card | 1st Ed pop 10 | Unlimited pop 10 | Rarer printing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| #1 | 200 | — | — | |
| #2 | 421 | — | — | |
| #3 | 425 | 212 | Unlimited | |

| #11 | 423 | 171 | Unlimited | |

| #19 | 194 | — | — | |
| #20 | 72† | — | — |
Is the flip priced in? Once, almost perfectly: Rocket's Mewtwo trades at $6,300 in both printings, so the market is paying four times as much per unit of supply for the pop-73 Unlimited as for the pop-293 1st Edition. Everywhere else the stamp still wins the price tag while the unstamped copy wins the census — the same pattern the Gym Heroes pop report documents on the sister set.
Which Gym Challenge Cards Are Hardest to Gem?
Gem rate is the other half of a pop report: not how many 10s exist, but what fraction of all submissions earned one. The brutal one here is the Unlimited Erika's Venusaur — the single most-graded Gym Challenge printing in our pyramid snapshot, and almost none of it gems:
4,612 gradings, 40 tens — a 0.9% gem rate, against 10.8% for the 1st Edition Charizard. The full leaderboard:
| # | Card | Gem rate | PSA 10s / total graded | PSA 10 price | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 2000 Gym Challenge Unlimited Erika'S Venusaur #4 | 0.9% | 40 / 4,612 | $2,700 | |
| 2 | 2000 Gym Challenge Unlimited Rocket'S Mewtwo #14 | 1.7% | 73 / 4,261 | $6,300 | |
| 3 | 2000 Gym Challenge 1st Edition Erika'S Venusaur #4 | 3.6% | 107 / 2,936 | $10,200 | |
| 4 | 2000 Gym Challenge Unlimited Misty'S Gyarados #13 | 4.5% | 165 / 3,694 | $2,520 | |
| 5 | 2000 Gym Challenge Unlimited Lt. Surge #11 | 6.6% | 171 / 2,577 | $790 | |
| 6 | 2000 Gym Challenge Unlimited Blaine #17 | 7.2% | 96 / 1,330 | $103 | |
| 7 | 2000 Gym Challenge 1st Edition Blaine'S Arcanine #1 | 8.7% | 200 / 2,286 | $4,680 | |
| 8 | 2000 Gym Challenge 1st Edition Rocket'S Zapdos #15 | 10.8% | 261 / 2,411 | $2,880 | |
| 9 | 2000 Gym Challenge 1st Edition Blaine'S Charizard #2 | 10.8% | 421 / 3,889 | $18,600 | |
| 10 | 2000 Gym Challenge 1st Edition Rocket'S Mewtwo #14 | 11.7% | 293 / 2,494 | $6,300 |
Every card near the top of that list is one where the PSA 10 is the trophy and the PSA 9 is the market. If you're weighing a raw submission, the PSA 10 value calculator turns these gem rates into expected value.
Is Gym Challenge Scarcity Priced In?
Not evenly — and that spread is the most useful table on this page. Price divided by PSA 10 population is what the market pays per unit of gem supply:
| Card | PSA 10 price | PSA 10 pop | Price per pop unit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2000 Gym Challenge 1st Edition Erika'S Venusaur #4 | $10,200 | 107 | $95 |
| 2000 Gym Challenge Unlimited Rocket'S Mewtwo #14 | $6,300 | 73 | $86 |
| 2000 Gym Challenge Unlimited Erika'S Venusaur #4 | $2,700 | 40 | $68 |
| 2000 Gym Challenge Unlimited Giovanni'S Persian #8 | $1,560 | 28 | $56 |
| 2000 Gym Challenge 1st Edition Blaine'S Charizard #2 | $18,600 | 421 | $44 |
| 2000 Gym Challenge 1st Edition Blaine'S Arcanine #1 | $4,680 | 200 | $23 |
The 1st Edition Erika's Venusaur costs $95 per unit of supply — more than double the $44the market pays for the Blaine's Charizard, the card everyone assumes is the scarce one. Attention, not census data, sets vintage prices. The full ranked scarcity list across all fifteen WOTC sets is in the 50 rarest WOTC cards, and the card-by-card sales histories behind these prices live in the Gym Challenge investing guide.
